Janus & Aurora

01 Vol 1, No 1Janus was the idea and namesake of Janice Bogstad. Jeanne Gomoll worked on the first issue and joined Jan as co-editor in the second issue. Jan focused on text content while Jeanne was primarily responsible for the layout and graphics.

Jan and Jeanne suspended their editorial partnership in 1979. Jan began publishing a fanzine named New Moon. SF3 and its publication committee continued to publish Janus, and subsequently changed its name to Aurora, although the numbering system was retained. By issue #20, Diane Martin took over as head of the SF3 publication committee and managed the fanzine until its final issue, #26, was published in 1990. One of the main causes of the fanzines’ demise was the increasing amount of the group’s energy consumed by WisCon, which is now recognized as the leading feminist science fiction convention.

Janus was nominated for three “Best Fanzine” Hugos in 1978, 1979 and 1980. Jeanne Gomoll was nominated for two “Best Fan Artist” Hugos in 1978 and 1980. Janus and Aurora were the most prominent feminist science fiction fanzines of their time. With the exception of Amanda Bankier’s fanzine, The Witch and the Chameleon, which ceased publication in 1976, Janus and Aurora were the ONLY fanzines with this focus.

We contacted as many Janus and Aurora writers and artists as we could find and asked their permission to post these electronic versions of the fanzines on-line. But there are quite a few people we could not locate. Their names are marked with an asterisk next to their names in the tables of contents. Help! Contact us <sf3info@wiscon.info>if you find your own asterisked name, or forward a link to this page to them if you have their contact information. Thank you!
